Dangerous Catch (Pd 4) Group 5: Why Should We Care?
“Our massive demands on the ocean’s bounty impacts life far beyond the shoreline: bushmeat hunting is on the rise in Ghana while in Namibia; fishing grounds struggle to recover as putrid fumes explode from the ocean depths and poison the waters; and radical new fish farms are sprouting up from Puerto Rico to Canada. Across the globe, all life is feeling the effects of overfishing. Can we protect fish in time to safeguard the ocean, life on land and ultimately ourselves? Find out how we all can make a difference.”

There are many reasons why we should care about the fish on Earth, in our oceans.

The four main reason are:

  1. All of the fish we eat will be extinct, and there will only be jelly fish.
  2. Recreational activities, such as snorkeling and scuba diving on coral reefs, won't be the same because there won't be any fish to enjoy.
  3. The sources of medicine that come from fish, such as fish slime and some fish venom, won't be available for our use.
  4. Some organisms clean the ocean water and if they die the ocean will become uninhabitable.

Bleached Coral Reef

Coral Reefs

More than 27% of the world's reefs have been destroyed or damaged and another 32% may be destroyed by humans in the next 30 years. These coral reefs have been threatened by the increase in atmospheric gases, overfishing, pollution, sea surface temperatures, rising sea levels, and more frequent, severe storms that negatively impact coral reefs. All of these effects lead to bleaching as well as declines in biodiversity, coastal protection, income from reef fisheries and tourism. If we act now, we could give reefs a chance to survive and fight off the effects of the climate and human activities.

CORAL has designed, tested, and proven how effective community-driven conservation can be. Scientific evaluation and CORAL's surveys of marine area managers, local community members, and other stakeholders as shown us the CRSD approach is the best way to get rid of locally generated threats and to promote a lasting conversation.
